Home Sleep Study

Dr. Brodner takes great pride in being on the leading edge of both techniques and technology in the fields of Sinus Surgery and Sleep Disorders.  One of the newest diagnostic tools at his disposal is the 'Home Sleep Study'.  Dr. Brodner realizes testing done in the comfort of your own bedroom is the environment that best reflects the pattern of your sleep habits.

Dr. Brodner uses the WatchPAT -- an FDA-approved portable diagnostic device that uses the most innovative technology to ensure the accurate screening, detection, and follow-up of sleep apnea. Its ease of use is unparalleled in the marketplace. There are no uncomfortable wires stuck to your head, nthing placed in your nose, or aggravating chest bands interrupting your sleep.

At The Center for Sinus, Allergy, and Sleep Wellness we aim to treat the causes, not just the symptoms, of sleep problems. Years ago it was acceptable to simply tell a patient "try this medication and see if it will help;" back then many diagnostic tools did not exist to find the causes of these problems. As diagnostic techniques have improved, specialists such as Dr. Brodner have become better at determining the source of sleep problems --Dr. Brodner utilizes this information to design treatment plans tailored to address the specific causes of each patient's problem.

After analyzing the results of the Home Sleep Study in a face-to-face meeting with the patient, Dr. Brodner will offer several management options including:  Oral Appliance TherapyCPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure)Provent Snoring and Sleep Apnea TherapyAllergy Shots & DropsMinimally-Invasive PEAK Uvuloplasty, or a combination of all of these.

What is a Home Sleep Study?

Rather than being administered in the lab/sleep center, a HST is administered to a patient in their own home. It is a simple, painless overnight procedure that monitors your brain waves, muscle activity, leg movements, heart rhythms and other body functions while you sleep. It is monitored by a highly-skilled sleep technologist.

Will I need to take time off of work for a sleep study?

This should not be necessary. A patient’s study usually begins in the evening and is completed before 7am enabling the patient to go to work following the sleep study. If you work a night shift or unusual hours, we will make arrangements for the study to be conducted during your normal sleep hours.

Will my insurance cover my sleep study?

Most major insurance companies, as well as Medicare, provide coverage for sleep studies. As with any medical procedure, we will verify coverage with your insurance company before scheduling a sleep study appointment.

How should I prepare for my sleep study?

Before bedtime, follow Dr. Brodner's directions concerning prescription medications.

What should I wear?

Wear whatever you usually wear when you sleep -- it's your bedroom, be comfortable!

Is there anything I shouldn’t do?

  • Please avoid alcohol, caffeine and napping the day of the study.
  • Don’t take over the counter medications, such as Tylenol PM, cough medications that cause drowsiness, etc., unless Dr. Brodner counsels you otherwise.

Will I be given any shots, injections or medications during my study?

No. This is a painless non-invasive procedure.

Should I take my usual over-the-counter or prescription drugs before my sleep study?

Please discuss this with Dr. Brodner. Don’t take over-the-counter medications that cause drowsiness, such as Tylenol PM or cough medications unless you notified Dr. Brodner and he has given you permission.  If you are worried that you may not sleep well during the study, Dr. Brodner may give you a sleep aid that will not interfere with the testing, but which will help give you relaxed sleep.

Can I get up to use the bathroom before the study?

Of course!

How will I get my results following my sleep study?

The sleep data is scored or analyzed by a senior technologist and interpreted by Dr. Brodner himself. Dr. Brodner will see you again in his office and thoroughly review the results of all of your testing, provide you with several options for appropriate treatment, and the fix your problem!
