Dr. Brodner will utilize a combination of the following methods to address your problem and relieve your symptoms:
Please note that Dr. Brodner recommends using medication ONLY when symptomatic.
| |
- Nasal saline (saltwater) irrigations are extremely important in the effort to reduce exposure to allergens. Frequent rinsing of the tissue lining the inside of your
nose and sinuses washes away bothersome substances before they can stimulate the body to produce allergy symptoms.
Use saline 4x EVERY DAY, even if asymptomatic
|
| |
- Nasal steroids are anti-inflammatory drugs that control allergic symptoms by reducing immune response to allergens within the nose and sinuses. At the
recommended dose the absorption of these medications is quite low, so they are safe and do not have the side-effects associated with steroids taken orally.
Use this nose spray [Nasonex, Nasacort, Veramyst, Omnaris, Rhinocort, Flonase] as your first-line medication option when symptoms strike.
|
| |
- Antihistamines are medications which block the chemical messenger (histamine) used by the immune system to produce allergy symptoms. As a result, they
help control the runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing associated with an allergy flare-up or “attack”.
Use this nose spray [Patanase, AstePro] in addition to your nasal steroid spray, if it fails to control your symptoms alone.
Use this pill [Clarinex, Xyzal, Zyrtec, Allegra] if the combination of Nasal Steroid + Nasal Antihistamine sprays fail to control your symptoms.
|
| |
- Leukotriene inhibitors are another class of medication which blocks the immune system’s response to allergens. This drug interferes with a different type of
chemical messenger to alleviate allergy symptoms. Dr. Brodner often uses it to control sinonasal polyps.
Use this pill [Singulair] in combination with any or all of the above medications if they fail to control your symptoms.
|
| |
- Decongestants may be utilized for short-term control of nasal congestion, sinus pressure, and ear fullness. Please notify your doctor if you are pregnant or suffer
from high blood pressure, chest pain, or prostate problems.
